No Seiyuu No Life: Yui Horie

Posted on the 29 July 2015 by Kaminomi @OrganizationASG

I came back from Hokkaido last week. I miss Hokkaido. In Hokkaido you don’t feel like you’re going to die when you step a foot outside…

It’s during these times of need that a beautiful voice like Yui Horie’s can save you!

No Seiyuu No Life: Yui Horie
Known for: Charle (Fairy Tail), Miss Monochrome (Miss Monochrome)

My favorite role: Houzuki (Otome Yokai Zakuro)

Somehow, it feels like this is becoming a trend, I mean, Yui Horie is already the second seiyuu I discovered thanks to Otome Yokai Zakuro. I also admit I feel a bit stupid I have taken so much time writing a post about her because not only is she one of the first female seiyuu I ever remembered the name of, she is also one of the rare seiyuu I have seen in person. And I have seen two. I haven’t written anything about the second one either.

Anyway, Yui is one great seiyuu. She is another one of those case of someone who can do anything, including singing and does it well. I have some doubts about her character design abilities though (see Miss Monochrome) but at least when it comes to her voice she can do pretty much everything. Including singing. Without auto-tune. (Again, Miss Monochrome is not a good example of her abilities).

I have nothing against Miss Monochrome per say and I find it pretty funny, I just find it sad to use so much auto-tune for a seiyuu who has a really great voice. Let’s say it goes with the character but I don’t like it.

What I like though is when she voices mean character. It hasn’t happened a lot, at least in the anime where she appears and that I have watched, but it is awesome. In fact, when I looked at all of her roles, only one stuck as one real mean character and it was Roda in Letter Bee. Which no one remembers and everyone should watch if it isn’t already done. And even then, Roda is a relatively minor character who only appears late in the series.

Usually though I can notice she is voicing rather strong characters who also have a strong side. For example, she is also voicing Tsubasa Hanekawa in Monogatari Series, which is a character with a lot of vulnerabilities, cute sides and who can be really weak at times  but I also think she is one of the strongest character in the whole series. Somehow I think that this character really shows off Yui’s talent of being able to do everything. Hanekawa is complex, so is her talent.
