New York – Day Four

By Alicebodkin94 @AliceBodkin

This morning we saw ourselves making our way to the 9/11 memorial. After spending yesterday uptown, we decided to locate ourselves downtown, catching a subway to the world trade center site.

There was most definitely a feeling of loss about the place, as I left the subway I could feel my stomach start to drop. It is strange because I was a very young child when the 9/11 happened, and I guess I never really understood at the time the impact of the events that took place that day.

When walking through the memorial, you are able to see pictures of other countries showing their support. And I found it touching and moving that in a time of great hardship and suffering, the world came together to grieve.

Here is a picture of one of the memorial pools:

Walking across the site, I noticed that the majority of the names seemed to be male. It’s hard to actually digest the volume of people that were killed and or lost loved ones in these events. But I was so glad to see that the city is building 4 new world trade center buildings. Such a brave step, showing the world that New York will come back bigger, better and stronger.

I spent the rest of my day in Soho and Tribeca. I found myself entering the Prada flagship store, and I was so delighted to have found it. My lecturer has spoken about the store before, but seeing it for real was amazing.

I definitely started to see Prada’s love for the 1920′s. Chaise Lounge styled sofas were in the window for mannequins to sit on. There was a black and white checkered dance floor, which looked like it could have featured at one of Jay Gatsby’s extravagant parties. Not to mention the mini fur shrawls that also existed within that era. But I totally loved it! The 1920′s is my favorite era, not just for fashion, but politics, literature and american history. Unfortunately I was unable to get any pictures due to a very serious looking security guard.

Being downtown, I really noticed the difference in terms of wealth, and that uptown is seemingly more rich than downtown. I did however managed to grab myself a Dear New York bag from Zara, which I have currently been focusing on for my report due in very soon!

After exploring what Soho had to offer, we decided to treat ourselves in the evening to a trip to Bloomingdales and I got myself a bargain! After falling in love with Prada’s store in Soho, I bought myself a Prada jewellery box, travel bag, perfume, roll on, which all came with freebies for $80! I was such a sucker for marketing and consumerism, but who cares! It’s ok to treat yourself every now and then!

As it was our last sleep in New York, we decided to walk 5th avenue for the last time, 20 blocks to our hotel. And believe me this was a big ask as we did a lot of walking this trip! However, it was worth it. I loved taking in the city and the atmosphere, bright lights, yellow taxis.

We then finished our walk with a dunkin’ donut. It was delicious!
