I just finished hanging recent paintings at the Albert Brown Salon located at 3424 Magazine Street in New Orleans (504-861-0090). I meet them at Art for Art’s Sake in August. There are a total of 17 paintings in the show, as seen below. I am very pleased to have this chance to show my work. The Salon shows a number of well-known New Orleans artists. They have a wide range of hair, nail, and skin care services. I have friends who have used their services and were very pleased.
There are seven larger scale close-ups of fruits and vegetables. They are 24" square except for the tomatoes which is 24" x 30". To create these works I set up a still life or attended a food market and took pictures to begin the process. Then I explored the possibilities from many angles with multiple photos and cropping before choosing the view to convey. While the works are realistic depictions, they are handled more like abstractions in terms of color and composition.
The ten small works in this show (12 " square) include images from this year’s Mardi Gras, as well as food from local restaurants and other sources. The gumbo is from Cochon. The oysters are from Casamento’s. The flan with two spoons is from La Macarena. The coffee is from a Paris café and the gumbo is from the Mayor’s Gala in Opelousas, a town whose slogan is "perfectly seasoned."
