In the latter part of 2016 we moved to a cottage that not only has a large garden on the edge of open countryside, but it also has a small area of woodland.

You're not exactly going to get lost in these woods, but it's a great area to see a wide range of birds and animals such as badgers and foxes as they pass through. Despite the area not exactly being wilderness it did seem a good idea to find a way to observe and photograph the visitors to these woods without disturbing them. The answer is, of course, a hide so having looked into a lot of products on offer I decided to buy a Simon King Ultimate Wildlife Hide.

The hide arrived quickly but due to the weather, and work commitments, I wasn't able to try it out properly. But we are enjoying a decent spell of weather at the moment so I took the opportunity to try it out and I'm very impressed.

Externally the hide is well camouflaged and looks equally well made. Some of the other features include,

  • Twin viewports on all 'windows' giving port-hole and wide cinematography options on all 4 sides
  • Low/ground level dual-window camera port at rear
  • Base corner flaps - can be weighted down with stones on either the inside or outside.
  • Moveable camouflage scrim material on all window internals.
  • Double-sided zip pulls allow opening/closing from inside or outside.
  • Zips and guys color integrated with camouflage material.
  • 'Silent' cord pulls on zip toggles.
  • Strong pegs and robust frame.
  • Extra strength material to prevent 'stitch-rip'
There is loads more information on Simon King's website so if you are looking for a hide I recommend you have a look at the Ultimate Hide. And if you do buy one you are helping Simon's Wildlife Charity which is trying to turn the tide on habitat loss.
Now all I need to do is produce some half decent shots using it!
