Only half an hour from Amsterdam in nearby Zaandam, Zaanse Schans is the best place in the Netherlands to see our iconic windmills. While the Netherlands used to be home to thousands of these spinning wonders, today the numbers have been drastically reduced. These days, if you want to get a glimpse of the rows of mills that used to dot virtually every horizon in the country, you have to head to Zaanse Schans.

Not only can you find some of the best surviving Dutch windmills, you can nibble on the locally-made cheeses and find out how a wooden shoe is made (and why!). Get the spirit of a Dutch village and a taste of the culture and tradition of the country outside of the capital.
If you want to see, hear and smell (remember- cheese factories) the Dutch countryside to its fullest, try out a bus tour - not only will you get to see the windmills of Zaanse Schans, but you'll drive along the narrow dykes and across the typically flat landscape to the nearby authentic fishing villages of Volendam and Marken. Stock up on souvenirs and get your picture taken in traditional Dutch garb - it's a great experience for friends and families.
