Nails | Going Neon with American Apparel

This is Neon Violet from American Apparel. I bought this, along with a few others from the neon range, a little while ago, but this is the first time I’ve really taken this color out for a spin. It makes a change from all the muted autumn tones I’ve been wearing. I really like it, and the more I wear it, the less dazzled I am. For a neon colour, I still think this one pretty tame though...

In terms of formula, it was fully opaque with two coats and dried quickly. All good. Strangely, it went matte when it dried, but apparently this is the case for all neons. A clear top coat solves that issue, anyway. However, the warning on the bottle, that said: “this product may contain a chemical known to the state of California to cause cancer, or birth defects or other reproductive harm”, freaked me out a little!! I’ve not taken much notice of the ingredients in my nail polish before, but I’ve also never had it spelled out so plainly.

The three harmful ingredients to watch out for in nail polish are DBP, Toluene and Formaldehyde. Although this one doesn’t contain DBP or Toluene, it does contain Formaldehyde. Weirdly, the other AA nail polishes are "3-free"… so it’s just the neon colours that contain formaldehyde. From now on, I'm making sure all my polishes are 3-free!

xx
