What’s the natural directorial choice for a popular young director who specializes in cult classics after he made a film like the Avengers? A Shakespearian piece, of course. Ok, maybe that wasn’t exactly what came to mind. To say that this film was a strange follow up would be an understatement. Many directors make popcorn film after popcorn film but the fact that Joss Whedon chose this project locks in his quirky film maker status among his young fan base. Shakespearian films have been done many times before, by this point the genre is as dead as the bard himself. Language that’s typically so stiff and unnatural with actors that are so proud of their piece, this one doesn’t fall into the cliches and tedium that films before it suffered. Joss manages to do something that I haven’t seen before. He makes the Shakespearian dialog sound natural and modern. I applaud the directing and the acting of this film, both of which help to allow the bard’s words to shine through with ease. This movie is bare bones in it’s presentation, black and white in a lavish mansion. The true star here is William Shakespeare, we see that his comedic situations could very well be the for runner to those that Joss has written recently. Anyone can make a movie with cgi and explosions, but it takes a real film maker to breath modern life into William Shakespeare.
