My Very Own Elysian Field

By Danielcarruthers

Even with my South African flora in my hand I am little the wiser in the face of such glorious abundance. The floral high point, so far, has been a field on the side of the road that the owner ensured was never cultivated so that it’s dramatically abundant wildflowers survive and thrive. Called the Tienie Versveld Flower Reserve, there is no charge to enter, you just park on the roadside and wander in – first slathering yourself in insect repellent as the local small flies are very persistent. It was the most beautiful and diverse habitat I have ever seen and once I am home I will work on identifications and post some of the superstars.
