My Travel Essentials At The Moment

By Winyeemichelle
With long weekends, city breaks and overnight stays all in my diary lately, it goes without saying that I’ve had to knuckle down on my travel essentials. Traditionally, I’m the gal who epically overpacks: 3 pairs of shoes for a 2-night weekend in the South of France, for example. But I’m trying to turn over a new leaf and I think we’re onto a winner with this little kit.

Aesop canvas pouch

Before we get into the *really good* stuff, here’s my top tip for keeping travel essentials together, particularly if you’re prone to back-to-back trips - an Aesop canvas pouch. Aesop give you these little cotton drawstring bags when you make a purchase and I’m pretty obsessed with them. Not only are they awfully aesthetically pleasing, they’re the perfect way to store bits and bobs that tend to go missing. Chewing gum, pocket tissues, tampons and a pocket mirror get put in one for my handbag, whilst Rescue Remedy, hand-sized wet wipes, Paracetamol and hand sanitiser tend to go in my ‘on holiday bag’. They’re perfectly sized to keep products together, basically.

Oral-B Pro 2500 Toothbrush

When the guys over at Oral-B sent me their new Oral-B Pro 2500 Toothbrush to try, I absolutely jumped at the chance. I’m already a huge fan of their Pro 600 but this one is oh so dreamy to use. Vibrations that alert you as to when to switch to a new part of the mouth (every 30 seconds), a 3D Cross Action brush head , a handy travel case and sleek black finish, it’s become my go-to thing to pack first. Who else is a chronic toothbrush-forgetter when going away?! I must have about 5 manual travel toothbrushes in the bathroom at the moment and another 2 at my boyfriend’s, but nothing quite matches up to the power of the Pro 2500.

Um, a passport, duh?

I always get questions about my passport cover/travel wallet whenever I post that obligatory ‘I’M GOING AWAY I’M SO FANCY LOOK AT ME’ Instagram. I house my passport and travel documents in this Iconic Design travel wallet. I picked it up from YesStyle and have used it religiously for about 4 years now! It’s supposedly made to safeguard your passport from being electronically de-tagged in airports but I mostly just adore it for all of its’ handy sections - great for keeping some travel money, ID cards, insurance cards and travel tickets in one place, especially if you also like to carry your passport around with you on a day-to-day basis when holidaying.

Fujifilm Instax Mini 8

I wrote a full post about this charming instant camera almost 5 years ago but the sentiment remains true: I bloody love this thing. Yes, the film is expensive and yes, it is pretty bulky, but I absolutely adore having a tangible memory to keep forever. Harvey and I used mine pretty obsessively when we went to Asia for a month and we STILL adore flicking through the photos today. It’s available here for a reasonable price and my favorite place to pick up film remains to be eBay.

A good book

Whilst it kills me to admit it, I don’t read nearly as much as I want to at the moment. When I’m at home, I’m working and when I’m out, I’m socialising. The moment I have some downtime, I can barely keep my eyes open to Netflix, let alone prop a book open! I’m tempted, even, to try audiobooks just to get through my ambitious reading list. But when I’m away/travelling, I can get shit done on the reading front. Right now I’m reading A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms by George R.R. Martin, which is the prequel trilogy to A Song of Ice and Fire (the Game of Thrones books) and I really rate it. Loving it. (Might share a recent reads - ironically - post soon if you fancy one?)

Rollerball fragrances

Something that I’m really sensitive to when traveling is scent and so I make it a huge point of ensuring I’m comfortable when traveling. I picked up this Chloe rollerball from Sephora when visiting Elodie a few weeks ago and it is perfect for handbags. A few rolls on the wrists and collarbone does wonders! I also really enjoy the scent of Tiger Balm, which is another essential for me. Rubbed into the temples and a touch on the nose (not really recommended but YOLO), it calms my nerves and is my ‘familiar’ scent that quells anxiety and chills me out.

Girlfriend Collective leggings

Oh yes. I’m one of those people. I’m just not that into you wearing jeans on flights. And I can’t get onboard with dresses because I’m not really that elegant. My Girlfriend Collective leggings and a Brandy Melville tee are my weapons of choice if I must be forced to sit upright for X number of hours. And I just can’t sing Girlfriend Collective’s praises enough.
