My Son Has Speech Delay and nobody will help me. I am a mom on The Real Supermum’s Facebook group and I wanted to share my frustration here on the blog. I am a mother to two boys aged 2 and 4, both have very bad speech delay.  My 4 year old son cannot get the words out and is delayed because off his speech. He is also very shy and my 2 year old son also has bad speech delay as he his copying how his older brother talks.

Both My Sons Have Speech Delay

For example the word dad, he says gaff as he can’t get certain sounds out. The word drink will be pronounced as gink. It affects my younger son greatly as he is learning from his brother. My 4 year old son gets very frustrated, angry and upset as nobody can understand what he says. It is so hard for me as his mother to watch how much he struggles daily.

My 2 year old son also has had 6 hearing tests since birth and keeps having a low reading in his right ear, they think this is down to glue ear and he needs to be seen again when he is 3. I find the children’s hospital is amazing for my 2 year olds hearing, but I find no help for my children’s speech delays.

All the health professions say to me is how I can help at home and then leave me to it on my own and I feel that is not fair. I am not a professional, I am not trained to know what to do in that field and I am afraid I could damage them more. I just want them to teach me how I can help my sons.

It all started with my 4 year olds speech; at the age of 2 I noticed that something wasn’t quite right. My little boy has had hearing problems from birth and I wish I had more help from the speech side off things and not to feel so alone.

I also have a 6 year old who is a twin, he was born prematurely and a very small size. He was in NICU for 5 weeks.  He has not been doing well in school; we have noticed he has fallen behind from his reports. They state he is behind and well below average for his age.  This is for every subject.

The school are not happy to help, it upsets me to see him find it so hard, he cannot even read a book . You can tell him the word and the same word could be on the next page and he would forget what the word was.

The school are quick to say he is way below average but when I ask about getting him added support in school they tell me time and time again that he will get there and they key is just to do stuff with him at home.

I am not happy about this and have asked the school for more help but they have told me they will look it to it when he is in year 3. By then he will be even further behind others his own age. I receive no help for this and I am worried he will get bullied the longer it goes on.  I wish I knew what I could do to get him the help he needs.
