When I was still living in England, I was hooked on coconut water for a while. Drinking the water of a coconut became one of those 'oh I must start doing this' things where we find out about all of the wonderful benefits and end up spending lots of money to get some of that goodness. Coconut water in England is pretty costly (one litre of it costs around 350-400Rs in the UK), there are obviously more expensive crazes, but I think I was blinded by those fantastic benefits and spent too much money on it. Apparently coconut water keeps you more hydrated than water and sports drinks, and we all want to be super hydrated so we can stay healthy and having beautiful glowing skin. Right?
Then I moved to India, a coconut water drinkers oasis, where you can find stalls selling large green coconuts everywhere. The men who sell these coconuts have bravery and serious skill, they grab a coconut and slice off the top with one swift swing of a huge machete! Purchasing a coconut in India could be compared to seeing a hair-raising knife throwing stunt at the circus! It seems selling coconut water is a pretty dangerous profession and I do wonder whether or not limbs have been lost!
Coconut water, high in potassium and low in fat, is really refreshing and pretty tasty (once you get used to it, the taste is not for everyone!). It's just what you need to hydrate yourself on a summer day in India... probably so essential on an autumn day in England. These days I don't have to spend a lot of pennies on coconut water anymore, I can get sweet and fresh nariyal pani straight from the nut with a straw for only 25Rs (That is 25 British pence for about half a litre!).
I may be missing my good quality cheeses and soft scones but at least I have a good supply of very fresh and very cheap coconut water!
