Golden Globes Red Carpet Review
by Stephen Best
My favorite fashion guru, style critic, personal shopper, and my GBFF (his words) has agreed to help us out here on the Momish Blog with a little fashion update from time to time. People often ask me where I found a particular dress or how I came up with a particular look. My answer every time is, "I'm dressed by Mr. Best." So we'll be calling these updates, "Dressed by Mr. Best". Be on the lookout for his posts and the fabulous tips and tricks that come with.
Hello all! It is Stephen from the "red carpet" of the Golden Globes here to discuss last night's hits and misses. Now I know we here in the real world would not be able to spend the 3 million dollars on earrings like A Kelly Osborn or $75,000 on a Haute Couture Gown like Jennifer Lawrence, but there are lessons to be learned and trends to be respected on the red carpet.
The starlets of the red carpet's gowns pretty much came down to three colors:

Red:
  • Zooey Descahel in vintage Oscar De La Renta heart bodice and full "Princess" skirt
  • Jennifer Lawrence in Haute Couture Dior, which explained the bullet bra top most thought unflattering
  • Smash Starlet Megan Hilty dressed as her mother in a matronly red v-neck
  • Clair Danes in a wrap Versace that had her looking so much like Heather Locklear Mid-nineties Melrose Place, I was waiting for her to slap someone and storm off.

Nude (or beige, or flesh, or taupe, or champagne or ballet pink):
  • Amy Adams
  • Megan Fox
  • Isla Fisher
  • Most successfully on Nashville star Connie Britton who has NEVER looked better

And of course black:
  • Juliana Margolis in black lace Pucci (looking a little Morticia Addams if you ask me)
  • Kate Hudson in black with gold accents (Purdue grad??) and a deep v neck
  • Sofia Vergara in another beaded black mermaid gown (she si so va-va-voom, but we have seen this before on her, MANY TIMES)
  • Adele whose "faunk use vury much" speech was my surprise high light
  • Debra Messing in a black to the floor Donna Karan and stacked bracelets on both arms, a la Wonder Woman.
  • The old adage about the SBD always being a due was single handedly undone by Smash starlet Katherine McFee. She showed more flesh than dress and the 2 straps covering her chest were so oddly cut she looked like and evil queen on some odd alien planet on Star Trek. Very costume, and not pulled off well at all.  Her Herman Munster stacked platforms rounded out a don't from head to toe!

So what this translates to for us every day people, is for a fun night out with a hottie or friends this season, black, red and champagne are great go to colors.
What trend is over?
The Statement Necklace. It was nude necks as far as this eye could see. The big statement earring (Taylor Swift and more ladies than I care to elaborate on) is the must accessory.
Some Red carpet highlights:
  • Getting it right (finally) Hayden Paniettiere in a white mermaid Roberto Cavalli and soft loose hair. Perfection for her and so much improved over past red carpet disasters.
  • Julianne Hough in Monique Lhullier, mostly a bridal designer who took what could have red wedding gown and added golden beadwork thought the torso. Punk Rock Bride so to speak and I thought Julianne pulled it off. The preying mantis ear clip was a bit too much, but over all this was a do.
  • There were several ladies in black and white. Julianne Moore in custom Tom Ford, Host Tina Fey in a white satin with black lace overlay, but my favorite was Julia Louis- Dryfus in a corset Vera Wang.
  • There was lace, there was tulle, there was a lot going on and she owned her look. Kept jewelry simple. Total class act.
  •  A red carpet do was Jessica Chastain in a sea foam, Calvin Klein V neck cut to her waist and a lot of double stick tape. I liked her pale skin red hair soft color dress. No she was a little off trend for the night, but she owned her look.
  • My last red carpet do was Girls star Lena Dunham in a chocolate brown gown (designer unknown). I am never a fan of visible tattoos and this girl is not a size zero, but I thought she looked polished and the best I have seen her on a red carpet. I am looking the other way at the fact she couldn't walk in heels and her posture was off......and that she read her speech from a piece of paper. The gown was chic.

Best and Worst:
Worst-As dreadful as Smash star Katherine McFee's overly sexed up and ill fitting black monstrosity was, no one was more of a let down the once fashion icon Lucy Lui. So much fabric was involved she had pockets? One "stylist" referred to it as a non- color. It photographed gray with huge floral patterns all over the full ball skirt. Over sized for her tiny frame, this eye sore was a HUGE don't on every level. And the messy side braid didn't help. Oh Lucy, indeed.
Best-As much as I adore the cut of the Halle Berry gown (she normally is my tops) I didn't love the pattern. And Sofia, we have seen the mermaid on you more times than I can comfortably count. My winner is Connie Britton. She was in beaded, champagne with soft loose hair. She looked like a glass of champagne, effervescent, fabulous, a little sweet and oh so smooth! Love her.
Best man-Hugh Jackman. Classic and not preening like a certain Mr. Clooney.
See you are theScreen Actors Guild Awards in a week!
