Verdict: Atmospheric Thrilling Horror

Story: From the Dark starts by showing a man attacked during the night before moving to meet couple Sarah (Algar) and Mark (Cromwell) on a vacation in the Irish countryside. As this is a horror movie we find our couple lost in the countryside and of course they split up looking for help as night falls.

With nightfall on them the couple reunite after finding a house but what is inside the house is something they have never seen before as they must battle against a vampire like creature that is scared of the lights which is their only defence.

From the Dark plays into the very basic horror storyline where we watch a couple trying to fight an unknown creature, this creature has vampire like tendencies without being fully vampire. We don’t meet any other characters than our couple while we do see the creature, mostly in shadows or in the corner of the eye, which helps build the unknown factor. I do think the simple side to the story really helps this film because it adds that extra horror needed in this film.

Actor Review

Niamh Algar: Sarah is one half of the relationship, she seems to be stronger and smarter than Mark when it comes to the traveling side and the fighting side of this film. It would be fair to say this is one of the strongest female horror characters in recent years never panicking through the situation. Niamh is great in this strong leading lady of horror role.

Stephen Cromwell: Mark is the boyfriend of Sarah, he comes off very cocky when try to show off to her which leads him into trouble as he gets the car stuck. Stephen does a solid job in this role but the character is designed to be weaker than Sarah.

Support Cast: From the Dark has a very small supporting cast with the only extras being the first victim and the creature itself.

Director Review: Conor McMahonConor does a great job directing this one as the film keeps us on edge from start to finish as well as respecting older horror genre we don’t see enough in modern cinema.

Horror: From the Dark uses old school horror have a gothic tone to the scares through the movie.

Settings: From the Dark uses the Irish countryside and house for the settings, in all honesty it could be any isolated location but this is the important side to the setting.
