Movie of the Day – Troll 2 / Best Worst Movie

Posted on the 30 January 2013 by Plotdevice39 @PlotDevices

The documentary teaser trailer hinted at this movie and today I dive into one of the best worst movies ever made.  Troll 2 is the cult phenomenon that dominates the late night cinema crowd, the ones that crave for something ridiculous in their film watching.  It is, for a lack of a better term, horrible.  It is just down right terrible, but that terribleness translates into a magical cinematic experience that spawned the documentary Best Worst Movie, which looks at the making and following that the film created.  Best Worst Movie is a wonderful companion piece to today’s movie, Troll 2.

Let’s get this shit started!

Troll 2

In this ultra-cheapo Italian knock-off a little boy tries to warn his family and friends that the evil trolls his late grandfather used to tell him about are real. Unfortunately, no one believes him and he and his sister are sent to the enigmatic town of Nilbog where nightmarish things begin to happen. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Lord, I couldn’t even bother to remember the plot line to this movie and frankly I don’t care to remember it.  All I know is that this super low budget movie got made and it is horribly bad, but wonderful to watch.  Troll 2, let alone me even realizing that there was a Troll 1 to begin, just delivers the worst/best experience possible.  Everything from the look, dialogue, acting, effects, EVERYTHING is just this mess of a movie.  I mean did you watch the trailer and subsequent clip of the movie.  Shit that ” OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD” is probably the most emoting that this done in that movie.  PERIOD.

I mean seriously, I have covered bad movies like The Room and Birdemic, but this is just beyond insanity.  It’s truly a movie that just defies your expectations of bad in a way that it is hilarious to witness.  It’s the sort of movie that is made for the late show of a theater, the thing that people get drunk for to enjoy in a roasting sort of way.  The movie just redeems itself with nonsensical moments that are just weird outbursts, stilted dialog and the worst line delivery possible.  Actors wavering between being over the top and then trying to be serious like someone from the Academy is watching them.  The movie gives off this vibe like it was a one take sort of movie and the trolls, my lord the trolls are amazing.

Just check out these scenes to get a feel for the movie if you aren’t excited for this gem:

I can’t recommend both Troll 2 and Best Worst Movie enough.  It’s best to watch them one right after the other to sort of figure out what you just witnessed.  Troll 2 is just a bad bad movie, but it was made with the best intentions that gave us highlights reels to play for people who haven’t seen the movie.  Best Worst Movie is a fantastic documentary about the making of Troll 2 and the sort of cult mentality that the followers have to this movie.  It makes me, a film fan, all tingly when there are people that truly hold these sort of movies up to a pedestal that we can enjoy.  It isn’t mocking love, but honest admiration for what was created.  It’s a perfect combo movie watching night for you.  I promise.
