Now I talked about the original Silent Night, Deadly Night back in December when it was around Christmas time. I mean it was an appropriate movie for the time and what better Christmas movie than one about a rampaging killer in a Santa Claus outfit. Well today I am going to talk about the sequel, mainly the only thing about the sequel that truly exemplifies the utter amazement that movies like this and there low budget qualities can totally redeem themselves. If you know about this movie, then you know exactly what I am talking about. If not, then get ready for the 20 second scene that is the crowning moment of this movie.
The door of the mental hospital opens, releasing Ricky from its confines. He takes with him the terrifying memory of his brother Billy’s death and the burning image of Mother Superior-the powerful figure that brought about his brother’s violent demise. For Ricky, starting a new life means avenging his brother’s death. By whatever means necessary, whether it be the cutting edge of a shiny steel knife blade, or the electrifying charge of a set of battery cables, Ricky is set in this blind journey of revenge leading ultimately to Mother Superior. As Mother Superior prays in the dark, we suggest she say an extra prayer for herself, because not even her faith will be enough to stop Ricky. Well I guess killing is a family affair. I personally don’t remember much from the first movie in terms of plot, other than a kid going wacko and killing people in a santa suit instead of you know, him going after people dressed as Santa’s who he blames for turning him into the killer he is. Whatever, I just want to talk about this one particular scene that is so ridiculously out of place and also might be the reason I fear one day of the week.
So here we go, presented without context and that’s the way I like it.
GARBAGE DAY!
Seriously, what the hell? The eyebrows, the laugh, the menacing music, the hilarious gun twirl and blow, it all makes for something so utterly ridiculous and out of place in a movie that…you know what…it fits really. Given the penchant for out of place, irreverently funny scenes in the Silent Night series, this completely works. I am sure they were all high fiving after that scene took place and that is by far and away, the most memorable thing from this movie. I couldn’t even begin to tell you what else happens. Only that this scene is the pure standout amongst a rather forgettable movie.
