Movie of the Day – Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter

The Son of God never seemed cooler until he started hunting vampires.  I am pretty certain that my time in catholic school didn’t cover any of Jesus’ vampire hunting adolescence.  I guess they just wanted to from his birth to his crucifixion in one school year, I would have probably done a lot better in religion class if they taught this.  All I have to say to this is let the power of Christ IMPALE YOU!

Forget that hack Van Helsing, for true extermination of the fanged undead believers turn to the one and only sandaled slayer, Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter. Having returned to Earth for the eagerly anticipated Second Coming, Jesus finds his bid to judge the living interrupted by a horde of angry bloodsuckers who possess the ability to walk in daylight. Of course even Jesus needs a hand now and then when it comes to battling the legions of the undead, and Mexican wrestling hero El Santo is more than eager to pitch in and do his part to ensure a safe Judgment Day. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I really don’t know where to begin with this movie other than it is just a wonderful mix and mashing of different genres.  You have your horror aspect in which Christ comes to hunt vampires, to kung-fu action set pieces and even musical sequences that are about as off the wall as the premise of a vampire hunting Jesus.  The whole movie is a ready made cult favorite with its low budget look and feel plus the campy acting that you get with this sort of movie.

I appreciate the fact that the filmmakers embraced what they were making and it shows well in the movie.  You got a fun premise, this no holds filmmaking with the only limit being budget itself and it breeds that sort of lo-fi creativity to come up with inventive ways to get your scene created.  JCVH has this throwback feel to the cheap grindhouse cinema where you can tell the degrading quality of the film, scratchy audio and this at home lab made gore.

It is the perfect film to watch with a beer and pizza and a group of friends that are just commenting on the ridiculousness of this sort of movie.  A nice exploitation film that sets itself apart from the pack of cult movies and honestly, I don’t need to say more about this movie other than how often do you get to see Jesus Christ kick ass?  Not often.
