Donald Trump's immigration policy is to deport as many undocumented immigrants as he can, and to keep them fro entering the country (by building a wall and issuing travel bans). It's a bigoted and racist policy, and ignores the many benefits that immigrants (both documented and undocumented) provide to this country (filling unwanted jobs, creating businesses, paying taxes, etc.).
But as on many other issues, Trump is out-of-step with the American public on immigration. A substantial majority of the public thinks the priority for government should be to provide a path to legal residence for undocumented immigrants (60%) rather that trying to deport them (13%), or try to keep them from entering this country (26%). That's a 21 point difference in favor of providing for legal residence.
The public also opposes any attempt to deport all undocumented immigrants by a substantial margin (27% to 71%) -- a huge 44 point margin. The only undocumented immigrants the public would like to see deported are those who commit crimes after entering the United States (78% to 19%) -- which was the policy in effect under President Obama.
The charts above were made from info in the new CNN / ORC Poll -- done between March 1st and 4th of a random national sample of 1,025 adults, with a margin of error of 3 points.
