Monochrome Mondays: In the Midst of Complacency

By Wickedying @wickedying

Random Trivia of the Day: I borrowed my second Monochrome Mondays post title from an article that was made for my client. It fits my ramblings for today’s topic so here goes nothing!

Anyway, I’ve had several people tell me I’m being too complacent and for a moment, I thought it was a good thing. I never really understood what it meant until recently.

According to dictionary.reference.com:

If you ask me where my complacency comes from, here’s my answer:

  1. I feel like such a failure that I’m afraid to disappoint.

  2. I become docile in exchange for comfort and security.

What I think and what I feel may not always mutually agree at times so a nagging hesitation lurking underneath is sort of expected. For every circumstance, I tend to weigh the pros and cons of all probable outcome. I wanted to go for what I think is best out of the options I have. In effect, I take action based on expected results (choosing the lesser evil) regardless of how I feel or think about it. That’s being complacent, right? 😕

My indecisiveness can range from simple to complicated. One of my easy struggles for example is choosing what outfit to wear or which shade of lipstick to commit to before going out. Four outfit sets and five shades later, I’m cool. The complicated part however is another story like not knowing which direction my life is heading to at the moment. I refuse to see what’s laid before me. Consequently, I prefer to let the situation take its course and leave everything to fate.

Chances and changes are big words. The impact of those two in one’s life cannot be denied. Change is constant. Chances are rare. On the other side of the spectrum is uncertainty and fear. Letting fear take control of our life is stifling possible progress. Meanwhile, thinking about the future and how uncertain it is makes us forget to live in the present. Anxiety robs us the chance of happiness. It keeps us from seeing reality for what it is.

It’s an ongoing battle within us. The scale can be tipped sometimes while trying to maintain equilibrium so we take temporary steps by stalling or (in modern terms) ghosting. It’s a quick fix but it’s not the solution though. At the back of our minds we ask ourselves: are we ready to deal with what’s bound to happen? In one way or another, we may end up doing what we should’ve done then.

“Even though you may want to move forward in your life, you may have one foot on the brakes. In order to be free, we must learn how to let go. Release the hurt. Release the fear. Refuse to entertain your old pain. The energy it takes to hang onto the past is holding you back from a new life. What is it you would let go of today?” ― Mary Manin Morrissey

Hmmm… I wish to let go of fear, anxiety, worry caused by my own assumptions, and unrealistic expectations of what the future holds. It’s exhausting thinking incessantly about the things we cannot control. How about you? What is it that I would let go of today?
