Mental Health Mondays – Finding a support system

As my newborn slept soundly in her bassinet, her muffled grunts and snorts what any mother dreams of, I struggled to keep my head above water.

I questioned my sanity and struggled with bouts of depression, wondered if I should have become a mother; I cried silently for fear of showing weakness.

While other mothers arranged play dates and trips to the mall for stroller clubs I obsessed over why my daughter couldn’t latch and why I couldn’t breastfeed, what people would think of me when I fed her with a bottle, and I sunk deeper into devastation.

Eating and showering regularly became a chore.

What was the point?

After months of darkness I sought help. The diagnosis was almost too easy for my doctor; take this pill, up this dose, read this material.

There was no one to hold my hand, tell me I wasn’t crazy, or to support me through the levelling out of medications.

My family tried but had a hard time understanding that what I was going through was normal.

That going for a walk wasn’t going to make this better.

I had thoughts swirling around in my head that kept me up at night and I needed a place to express myself.

That’s when I found blogging.

I found a connection.

I found support.

Mothers who were experiencing exactly what I was and could understand what it felt like.

Through blogging, social media, writing, and connecting with other women the black cloud lifted and I could see the light.

I knew there was hope.

Women I had never met reached out their arms and pulled me out of the darkness.

They can save you too!
