-- John F. Kennedy was a popular, charismatic president, beloved by many. But he didn't always believe he had the strength or courage for that office. As a child he was sickly and also overshadowed by his strong, capable, athletic older brother Joe. After Joe Jr.'s death John had to work hard to live up to his own expectations and to those of his father. He overcame pain and self-doubt to see the country through one of the most difficult crises in its history.

Image: United Nations - Peacekeeper? (Global Issues), by Edward Johnson. Publisher: Hodder Wayland (June 30, 1995)International Day Of United Nations Peacekeepers Day
-- The date, 29 May, was chosen because on that day in 1948, the first UN peacekeeping mission, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), began operations, with a group of unarmed military observers in Palestine. In a videotaped message to be broadcast to peacekeepers around the world on the Day, Secretary-General Kofi Annan emphasized that the mission of UN peacekeeping remains vital. While peacekeeping by itself cannot end a war … it can prevent a recurrence of fighting. Above all, it gives time and space for conflict resolution. It gives peace a chance. Source
Read: United Nations - Peacekeeper?, by Edward Johnson
-- A history of the UN and a discussion of its peace-keeping missions since its inception. Johnson discusses both its successes and failures, and the reasons. The book contains up-to-date maps; a good glossary; fact files that give concise facts about the areas under discussion; media watches, which offer relevant news clippings from major news sources; and an abundance of photos and maps.
