Taking full advantage of the glorious April in Paris weather, I went to see the Mapplethorpe/Rodin Exhibit at the Rodin Museum. As much as I desired to see the exhibit, I was more excited by the prospect of visiting the beautiful grounds of the museum which were in full spring bloom.

The exhibit is an exploration of the unlikely commonality of Mapplethorpe’s and Rodin’s work.

The one obvious similarity is male and female nudes and the exhibit extends to seven themes, including Movement and Tension, Black and White/Light and Shadow, Eroticism and Damnation. For example, there is a section that highlights both artists draped their subjects in cloth. Another interesting observation is that although Rodin was heterosexual, he sculpted male figures, and Mapplethorpe who was obsessed with men, photographed women.

After the exhibition my friend and I had cool drink in the outdoor garden café and soaked up the sunshine and the beauty of the garden. We strolled around the grounds fully appreciating Rodin’s masterpieces and feeling lucky we can visit them anytime we want.
