Making Your Home Your Haven: How To Relax This Winter

By Heather Hahn @HeatherHahnn

Chances are, you’re going to spend a lot of time at home this winter. Sure, there are plenty of festive activities to go to, and work, and your friends, and date night, and the gym if you can face it. Maybe you’re even taking a winter sun break! (If so, aren’t you lucky?!) But the rest of the time you’ll be enjoying your home, your couch, and your bed. Here are some tips to turn your home into the perfect place to relax this winter.

Your Hallway

Make sure there’s a light on when you get home, and ensure that there are no draughts getting in. If necessary, you can get a draft excluder. This will help you save on your energy bills as well as keeping you warm in your home. Make sure that your hallway isn’t bare and barren – coat racks and umbrella stands are both useful and decorative. Finally, frame a piece of your kids’ artwork to put on the wall.

Your Living Room

It’s a great idea to paint your living room in neutral colors – that means that whenever you feel like it, you can buy a few new touches and entirely transform your space. This time of year it’s a great idea to introduce some cozy colors to your room, like red, gold, orange and purple. Buy a new throw to keep on the back of your couch to curl up underneath to watch Christmas movies, and look in thrift stores for a new nest of tables so each of your family members has a place to keep their hot chocolate where it won’t get knocked over.

Your Bathroom

There’s nothing better in wintertime than a hot bath. If you’ve been out for a long time watching fireworks or Christmas lights, chances are you’ll be feeling very chilly. When the cold gets into your bones, the best way to feel better is to have a nice warm bath. Make sure you’ve invested in a heated towel rail for a nice warm towel when you’re done, and run the shower for a few minutes before you go into the bathroom to make sure it’s warm and steamy so you don’t have to wait for the bath to run in the cold. Buy a scented candle that smells like cloves and cinnamon and get a waterproof cover for your Kindle so you can read in the bath as you slowly heat up.

Your Bedroom

Make sure you’ve bought high quality bedding. Not only will it last longer through more washes, but it’ll also be more comfortable and give you a great night’s sleep. If you have any back or neck pain, check out new pillows – chances are, yours aren’t giving you the support you need at night. If you find yourself cold at night, get an extra blanket to throw over your bed – fake fur will keep the heat in! If your partner is away for the night, heat up a hot water bottle to take into bed with you. Chances are, you’ll be feeling the cold because at night we get a lot of heat from whoever we share a bed with. Enjoy it through the winter because you might not appreciate it as much when July rolls around!
