Saint Valentine (or in Latin, Valentinus) is the name a martyred Bishop of the early Christian Church in ancient Rome. The name “Valentine”, derived from valens,  meaning worthy or strong, and was popular in Late Antiquity. He was active in the 2nd century.

He was executed because, during that time, it was illegal to be a Christian and the marriage ceremonies were considered invalid by the Roman authorities. Christians could have all their property confiscated by the state and put to death in the Colosseum, if discovered and proven to be a Christian. So understandable, Bishop Valentine married Christians in secret.

One of the Bishop personal symbols was the rose. The rose has always had deep mystical meaning in every mystery school in the ancient world. Obviously it symbolizes romantic/passionate love, with color red. It also symbolized for Valentine, the blood of the martyred saints before him.

Love and it’s patron Saint, Valentine! The rose is a delicate flower, requiring great care and nurturing to thrive, very similar to a healthy love relationship. The powerful fragrance that a rose casts off is symbolic of the general happiness that lovers often feel. The rose also requires occasion punning or cutting off to grow. And of course, most modern lovers are familiar with the meaning of the thorns. They represent those painful issue and problems with must overcome to get closer to our lover.
