London Milliner Philip Treacy Designing for MAC Cosmetics

Irish milliner Philip Treacy will be launching a spring makeup collection with MAC Cosmetics in April 2015, based in London this poetic and surrealist hat-maker is set to design an exclusive make-up range  MAC never ceases to amaze us with creative collaborations; Viva Glam with Rihanna and The Simpsons Collection while Treacy’s collections has been worn by the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker, Lady Gaga, and members of the Royal Family. The new capsule collection project has been in the works for around two years, according to Treacy, who was able to let his own tastes dictate the look of the line.

“Makeup…enhances the features. Which is what hat’s are about,” said Treacy to WWD. “It’s a painless surgery.” This is not the first time that the London-based designer has worked with the cosmetics giant and this time the collection will focus on three color palettes. With a rainbow of florals- from Giambattista Valli and a gold collection with Prabal Gurung, the make-up label is merging the worlds of fashion and beauty, giving carte blanche to Philip Treacy to create an exclusive capsule collection.

The Irish master hatter and regular on the runways – including Chanel and Dior via Valentino, Givenchy and Alexander McQueen – is known primarily for his avant-gardist eccentricity, something the designer also sees in the beauty house. “M.A.C is a futuristic label; I have always admired its ability to think outside of the box”. The collection will be made up of 12 brightly packaged products, for your face, eyes, cheeks and lips, not to mention the celebrated brushes, which will also receive the Philip Treacy treatment.

Although the full details of the palettes are yet to be revealed the collection is to be inspired by Treacy’s hats: Metallic by an Art Deco silver headpiece, Colorful by a feathered pink one, and Gothic from a black lace mask. The collection will be scheduled for April and other products include two Pro Longwear Paint Pots, two highlighter powders, three lipsticks, three Fluid eyeliners and mascara.

Together with MAC makeup artist and photographer Sølve Sundsbø, the designer also has created a series of images for the collection’s campaign. Treacy described one of the campaign’s eye looks as having a “Turner-esque” color palette, while another, in shades of blue, evokes “a night out in Santorini.”
