Leftists Against US-Cuba Rapprochement

Posted on the 19 December 2014 by Calvinthedog

I do not agree with this take, but it is interesting to see another POV. Also please note that Obama’s policy towards Cuba continues to be “regime change.” That’s not surprising, but it is a bit depressing.

Oh and you know Alan Gross, the poor innocent American imprisoned by the evil Cubans. He was a spy. He was working for USAID, the US Agency for International Development. That is a well known CIA front group. USAID has been run by the CIA since the mid-1960’s. Did you read that crap about how he lost 100 pounds in a Cuban prison and his health is precarious?

Well first of all, he was overweight to start with, so the weight loss is not a bad thing. Second of all, he is suffering from prostate cancer. That’s why he lost all the weight and his health is precarious. It has nothing to do with horrible Cuban prison conditions. Anyway, Cuban prisons are not so bad. If you compare them to your average Latin American prison, Cuban prisoners actually have it good. For one thing, torture, while it does exist in Cuban prisons, is nevertheless rare.

Via Facebook:

It is one thing for a Cuban worker to perhaps celebrate the fact that US imperialism has been forced to abandon its attempts to physically overthrow the workers’ state; but it is quite another for someone in the US to applaud the actions of the imperialist regime here that continues to advance the counterrevolution through other means.

This new policy is an utterly reactionary restatement of the US government’s hostility to the Cuban workers’ state. It openly proclaims as “the best of intentions” its half-century-long campaign to overthrow workers rule there. The travel provisions still deny ordinary US workers the right to freely travel and are specifically designed to promote capitalist counterrevolution. The justification for this shift is identical to the reasoning last week for backing away from CIA torture: “It didn’t work.” Even though some in Cuba might view this as providing some relief from the blockade, US Marxists should denounce the Obama regime for this expression of its blatant hostility to the right of Cuba to national self-determination and its hostility to socialism.
