Le Petit Marché in the 3rd: A Relaxed Refreshing Rentrée.

By Johntalbott

Augsept 2013 0016.1 Le Petit Marché, 9 rue de Bearn in the 3rd, (Metro: Chemin Vert) 01.42.72.06.67, open 7/7 and in August, is a place I found myself at, this one of the last days between the governmental rentrée and the scholastic.   Time Out, whom I used to work for,  says "its "menu is short and modern with Asian touches.....[and] there's a short wine list."

Not anymore, the "menu" that is the prix fixe, is short but the carte long, the wine list is ample and there was nothing Asiatic about the place except the 24 visitors from the Orient whom I suspect were there more because it's two blocks from the Place des Vosges than its Asian-influences.

I liked the sound of the 14.50 E 2-course "menu" so ordered off it, starting with the rillettes of tuna with herbs on superb toasted bread with superb salad greeens and tasty dressing - it beat the pants off a miserable tunafish salad sandwich from a caterer 48 hours ago.

Then I had the sauteed shrimp with vegetables; now in this case the shrimp Colette sourced and cooked 36 hours ago were miles ahead of theirs in terms of flavor, plumpness and zest, but their blandness was compensated for by the base of petitpois which were just about the best I've ever had, just yummy.

My bill, with no bottled water but a 1/2 bottle of their own rosé and a coffee, was 26.50; certainly the best price-quality place of the rentrée. dB level, a not unreasonable 70 dB.

Go?  Indeed, you'd never know the Costes octopus had a tentacle in it.
