Late Night Adventures

“I’m going on an adventure.” —Bilbo Baggins

On Sunday night, I posted a quote on my Facebook which said: “I want a late night adventure. I want someone to call me up and say, “I’m outside. Let’s go do something!” I want to go out late at night in my pjs. Maybe drive around. Go to a park and just swing on the swings. Maybe sit in the grass and watch the stars or maybe go to a 24 hour food place and pig out. I just want a late night adventure with people I like to be around. No drama. Nothing but good vibes and good company.”

The last late night adventure I had took place after my friend Nell’s wedding when I invited myself to a friend’s place, drank most of his vodka and then proceeded to dance by myself on his deck, much to his amusement.

Within minutes my Facebook post racked up ‘likes’ as friends agreed how fun it would be to head off to Pancake Manor for a midnight feast, a drive through the city or even a trip to the beach to watch the moonlight on the waves and tagged the friends they’d like to go on an adventure with.

What I didn’t expect was that four hours later, I would be woken by a phone call from my mate JB’s boyfriend Mic.

Mic, JB and I.

Late night adventurers … Mic, JB and I.

Thinking it was the middle of the night, I immediately panicked that something was wrong but my fears were quickly put to rest when Mic announced they were coming to pick me up for a late night adventure.

It turns out it was only 11pm.

It didn’t matter that it was a Sunday night, or that I had eaten almost my body weight in chocolate and mint choc chip ice-cream at Seaworld earlier in the day, I grabbed some pants (because everyone has seen enough of me in my underpants) and headed for the stairs.

Much to JB’s dismay, I didn’t appear wearing flannelette pjs and fluffy slippers instead opting for the gym clothes that were beside my bed.

Ten minutes and some googling later, we arrived at Death before Decaf, a 24-hour espresso bar on Brunswick Street in Fortitude Valley. Crazy cat videos played on the plasma TV, skateboards and skulls decorated the wall and plastic milk crates were used as seats out on the street.

Three hot chocolates and a delicious chocolate chip and walnut cookie and we had our own mini party for three.

Less than an hour later, I was home in bed with a smile on my face and a plan to pay it forward—I now have six months to plan a late night adventure for JB and Mic when they get home from their round-the-world trip and jet lag is keeping them awake at 3am.

If anyone else is in the mood for an adventure, just give me a buzz (but not tonight, I need to catch up on sleep).

What would be your ideal late night adventure?
