Last Minute Gift Alert – DC Deeply Discounting Digital Copies of Their 25 Most Essential Graphic Novels

Posted on the 22 December 2013 by Weminoredinfilm.com @WeMinoredInFilm

A couple of years ago, DC just scrapped everything and relaunched all of their comic book titles with new continuities, altered origin stories, re-designed costumes, etc.  ’Twas called the New 52, and while it may have succeeded in attracting new readers previously intimidated by the often byzantine continuity of long-running comics it also seriously angered their core audience of faithful comic book readers.  However, we can all agree that DC is still the home of some of the most essential graphic novels of all time.  In fact, in another bid at appealing to the general audience DC laid out what it considered to be its 25 most essential graphic novels earlier this year, published in the free guide DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels and Chronology 2013.  Many of these titles are old enough you can rent them for free at your local library, and a handful of them have already received the movie treatment, be it live-action (Watchmen, V for Vendetta, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) or animation (The Dark Knight Returns, Batman: Year One, All Star Superman).  Beyond that, one of them – Batman: The Long Halloween- was used for a huge junk of the plot of Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight, and another – The Sandman – was just announced as in development for a live-action movie.

However, for the most part you can’t go wrong with these unquestioned classics of the genre.  Now, just in time for Christmas, DC is deeply discounting the digital copies for all 25 graphic novels, pricing them at $5.99 until January 2, 2014.  They normally cost $11.99-$19.99.  If you’ve never read a digital comic before, you’re missing out.  You can read panel-by-panel instead of page-by-page, and the art is all the more gorgeous on the HD screen of your tablet.

So, if you are in need of a last minute holiday gift or just have always wanted to read The Watchmen, The Sandman, Batman: Year One or have been meaning to try to get into comics for a while now this is a fantastic place to start.

WHERE CAN I BUY THESE?

Amazon, DC, and Comixology

Below are the 25 on-sale titles along with the descriptions provided by DC on their official website:

1. Watchmen

This Hugo Award-winning graphic novel chronicles the fall from grace of a group of super-heroes plagued by all-too-human failings. Along the way, the concept of the super-hero is dissected as the heroes are stalked by an unknown assassin. One of the most influential graphic novels of all time and a perennial bestseller, WATCHMEN has been studied on college campuses across the nation and is considered a gateway title, leading readers to other graphic novels such as V FOR VENDETTA, BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS and THE SANDMAN series.

2. The Dark Knight Returns

Hailed as a comics masterpiece, THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS is Frank Miller’s (300 and SIN CITY) reinvention of the legend of Batman. It remains an undisputed classic, one of the most influential stories ever told in comics, and is a book cited by the filmmakers as an inspiration for the most recent Batman movies. It is ten years after an aging Batman has retired, and Gotham City has sunk deeper into decadence and lawlessness. Now, when his city needs him most, the Dark Knight returns in a blaze of glory. Joined by Carrie Kelly, a teenage female Robin, Batman takes to the streets to end the threat of the mutant gangs that have overrun the city. And after facing off against his two greatest enemies, the Joker and Two-Face, for the final time Batman finds himself in mortal combat with his former ally, Superman, in a battle that only one of them will survive.

3. The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes and Nocturnes

NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Neil Gaiman’s transcendent series SANDMAN is often hailed as the definitive Vertigo title and one of the finest achievements in graphic storytelling. In PRELUDES & NOCTURNES, an occultist attempting to capture Death to bargain for eternal life traps her younger brother Dream instead. After his seventy-year imprisonment and eventual escape, Dream, also known as Morpheus, goes on a quest for his lost objects of power. On his arduous journey Morpheus encounters Lucifer, John Constantine, and an all-powerful madman. This book also includes the story “The Sound of Her Wings,” which introduces us to the pragmatic and perky goth girl Death.

This collection includes new introductions by Miller and Mazzucchelli, loads of reproductions of original pencils, promotional art, unseen Mazzucchelli Batman art, Richmond Lewis’s color samples, script pages and other surprises.

In a world without political freedom, personal freedom and precious little faith in anything, comes a mysterious man in a white porcelain mask who fights political oppressors through terrorism and seemingly absurd acts in this gripping tale of the blurred lines between ideological good and evil.

6. Saga of the Swamp Thing: Book One

Before WATCHMEN, Alan Moore made his debut in the U.S. comic book industry with the revitalization of the horror comic book THE SWAMP THING. His deconstruction of the classic monster stretched the creative boundaries of the medium and became one of the most spectacular series in comic book history. With modern-day issues explored against a backdrop of horror, SWAMP THING’s stories became commentaries on environmental, political and social issues, unflinching in their relevance.

SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING BOOK ONE collects issues #20-27 of this seminal series including the never-before-reprinted SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING #20, where Moore takes over as writer and concludes the previous storyline. Book One begins with the story “The Anatomy Lesson,” a haunting origin story that reshapes SWAMP THING mythology with terrifying revelations that begin a journey of discovery and adventure that will take him across the stars and beyond.

7. Fables Vol. 1: Legends in Exile

WINNER OF FOURTEEN EISNER AWARDS. But when Snow White’s party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Fabletown’s sheriff, a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf, to determine if the killer is Bluebeard, Rose’s ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber.

8. Batman: The Killing Joke

This is the unforgettable event that forever changed Batman’s world, adding a new element of darkness with its unflinching portrayal of The Joker’s twisted psyche. Writer Alan Moore, acclaimed author of WATCHMEN and V FOR VENDETTA, offers his take on the disturbing relationship between The Dark Knight and his greatest foe.
