Last Minute Costumes: Continued

By Trendrighter @trendrighter
It is really hard for me to justify spending almost $100.00 on a cheesy costume from one of these on-line stores or at a local pop up shop. The quality and the fit is too hard to judge when buying something in a plastic bag. I myself have done this in the past, but almost immediately regret it and end up wearing the same thing 2 or 3 years in a row just to get my moneys worth. And lets face it, the pictures are confusing and the excitement is just not there year after year in the same get up. If I can rarely wear the same thing twice, then expecting myself to do so on a day where pictures are being snapped left and right... is just not going to make me happy. For those of you who feel the same way, trade with a friend or put a twist on it for the next use. For example; you are a cheerleader one year... be a dead cheerleader the next or a zombie cheerleader. Adding only a few cuts and tiers and make-up adjustments make your costume fresh and ready for the parties!

Here are some more makeshift budget friendly costumes.

Actually this is what I will be this year. A cute pin-up style dress or outfit works here with the body paint and hair with silk flowers. Spray your hair black or pull out an old black wig. I have spent $7.00 so far; 3 silk flowers and the paint in a tube at Rite Aid was on sale for 50% off, for .50 cents a tube! I have a dress similar to this, but might be borrowing a black pencil skirt from a friend to wear with my black corset. Shoes; I will be rocking a pair or lime green lamb shoes that have diamond studs up the front. Its going to be ROCK TASTIC!

Cat In the Hat
Adorable, sweet and warm! Chances are you have a LBD (Little Black Dress) that is possibly out of date, or on the too tight side, so its perfect for "hoe-a-ween" It is up to you how creative you would like to get this late in the game. I say you could go without the white belly piece.  You need high white socks, with red sharpie drawn around and around to look like these socks is really cute. Remember this is a drawing from a cartoon book, so the more home-made and "drawn" you look, the better.  White gloves and a pair of cut up old pantie-hose on your arms will suffice or even better, do you have a pair of black leggings that have the hole in you know where that you don't need any more??? Yes! Cut those and slip them over your arms. The white gloves, you are probably going to need to purchase, but maybe you are not apposed to painting your hands white... with acrylic paint of course, just do the tops of your hand, and sparingly to give it just the right effect.
Now for the harder part...The head piece; buy it.... or buy a pair of the kitty ears, maybe you or a friend have an old pair, and the hat can be an old chief's hat drawn on (like the socks).... Or think like a 3rd grade teacher, grab white paper a red sharpie and get drawing your stripes, role the paper to be the size as above, staple a bottom red lip for stability and tape or hot-glue to your headband.
The finishing touches...  Add whiskers with a black eye pencil and a bit of white to your face. Tail, pin to your dress. Red bow-tie or red tie or sorts around the neck is a must!

Dead Bride
Much like the ghost example this is easy. White make up with accentuated smoky eyes. Black silk roses or maybe you have some dead roses in your yard to pick and hold. The shoes can be white or black, cut up your pantie-hose. The hair should just be a mess with adding baby powder to the roots and pull to the ends. I like the idea of a messy up-do here, it should look like you were buried right after the ceremony and now you are back to haunt the living! For the dress, these are easily found at a good-will for very cheep, or maybe an old friend recently got divorced and you could use their gown?  To achieve the gray technique, get an old news paper and wet it, then rub it on the dress in the areas you would like gray tints. Use black costume jewelry, or the real thing. Dip die the tulle black with RIT if you have any laying around or you could wear white, just get it dirty.
