AUTHOR INTERVIEWwith Juli RevezzoWhere do you dream of traveling to and why?Ireland. I would love to see the country, and especially the sites important to the Celtic myths that inspire me. I think, thanks to Lady of the Tarot, I’d love to see Paris, too. Who is your favorite author?
I enjoy reading a lot of different types of fiction (and non-fiction too!) but I’d have to say my favorite authors include the fantasy author Michael Moorcock, and my writing also owes something to the Gothic author J. Sheridan le Fanu. I also love several indie authors, Jolene Dawe, Marsha A. Moore, and Suzanne G. Rogers among them.What was one of the most surprising things you learned while writing your books?
One of the most surprising things I learned was that tarot was accepted by the general populace in the 18th and 19th century. Until I started researching for Lady of the Tarot, I knew it was a parlor game, more or less, but I didn’t quite have a grasp on how many people sought out tarot card readers for advice in those days.
Do you listen to music while writing? If so what?Yes. Mostly heavy metal and lately Americana has formed a good portion of my playlists. For my latest release, Lady of the Tarot, I can point to some Iron Maiden, as well as songs like Boxcar, by Shovels & Rope being on rotation during the years I wrote the book.What books have most influenced your life?Among others, Edgar Allan Poe. I really loved his poem the Bells, and obviously, The Raven and Murders in the Rue Morgue. The way he can blend horror and mystery is just … really inspiring. No one tried to squish him into one little box or another. Also Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. I’ve always seen it more than a monster story. The Elric series by Michael Moorcock also had a profound influence on me. If I hadn’t found those books, I wouldn’t be a writer.
Are names important to your story?Yes, at least on some level. When I was in school, one of my professors told me he thought naming characters after traits you wished them to portray was cliché. But with Lady of the Tarot, I couldn’t resist, and so one character, got her name because of the meaning: Charity. She’s the hero’s cousin and she’s just like her name. J Also, The Maigny family name came from Charles de Maigny who wasin the 16th century Captain of the king’s guards. It seemed like an appropriate noble name for the family in my novel.
What are your favorite TV shows?
My favorite shows right now are Once Upon a Time and Sleepy Hollow. J I can’t wait for Sleepy Hollow to come back from their break!
