Kristin Bauer van Straten Working with PCRM to End Testing on Chimpanzees in 2012Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pamela Sywnford de Beaufort) has partnered with Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) to end testing on chimpanzees once and for all in 2012. The actress and the non-governmental organization are working to get the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act passed in Congress this year. The bill already has 160 members of Congress who have sponsored and co-sponsored the act.

Now it is time for a vote. Kristin wrote a letter to one of her senators, Barbara Boxer, encouraging her to schedule a time to vote on the act which you can see below. PCRM also posted a video of Kristin pledging her commitment to ending this cruel and outdated scientific practice.

Office of U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer

Washington, DC 20510

Dear Sen. Boxer,

Please schedule a vote for the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act. This bill would end cruel, wasteful experiments on chimpanzees and redirect funding to more effective methods of studying human diseases.

I love all animals, and I’ve always been fascinated by chimpanzees. They use tools, grieve for their dead, and are capable of complex communication with humans. When chimpanzees are used in invasive experiments, they are frequently kept in small metal cages, deprived of normal social interaction, and subjected to harmful procedures. Observational research shows that chimpanzees used in laboratories often suffer from depression or post-traumatic stress disorder.

Chimpanzee experiments are clearly cruel. And when you consider that they do not advance scientific research, it becomes obvious why so many researchers, members of Congress, and citizens across the country are speaking out on behalf of these animals. More than 160 senators and representatives have already signed on as co-sponsors. Now the bill needs to come to a vote.

The Institute of Medicine recently released a report finding that chimpanzees are not needed for research on a long list of human diseases. That’s why so many chimpanzees in American laboratories are no longer used in active protocols. And it’s also one reason why so many other countries—from Japan to Belgium to New Zealand—have prohibited chimpanzee experimentation.

Please schedule a vote for this crucial bill as soon as possible. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Kristin Bauer

You as Trubies can help end this practice by sending a letter to your own senator here. Please consider doing so. I did!
