kretschmer wheat germ

I usually have a jar of wheat germ in my house – it’s a great ingredient to add in baked goods like muffins and pancakes, or you can add to to a smoothie, or sprinkle it on salad – but why should you add wheat germ to your diet?

Why does the Mayo Clinic list wheat germ as one of the “10 health foods for eating well?” It’s simple: Gram for gram, wheat germ offers a significant dose of vitamins, minerals and protein. According to Kretschmer’s website:

At only 50 calories per 2-tablespoon serving, Kretschmer Wheat Germ delivers a protein-packed punch of vital nutrients, including:

Vitamin E: This fat-soluble antioxidant helps to protect cells and tissues from damage and may ward off certain diseases.
Folic Acid: A must-have for pregnant women—and a good idea for everyone else—this B vitamin helps make healthy new cells to protect against certain cancers.
Magnesium: This mineral helps keep your heart, bones and immune system strong. Recent data also suggests it may even slash your Type-2 diabetes risk.
Thiamin: This B vitamin helps convert carbohydrates into energy. It’s also essential for the proper functioning of the heart, muscles and nervous system.
Phosphorous: Working with calcium to build strong bones and teeth, this mineral is also necessary for the growth, maintenance and repair of all tissues.
Zinc: Your body uses this mineral for hundreds of functions, such as fighting off viruses, helping wounds heal, DNA synthesis and proper cell division.
BONUS: Wheat germ is also a fiber-rich source of high-quality non-animal protein and only contains heart-healthy polyunsaturated fat. Extra bonus: There’s no sodium.

My weigh in was yesterday – I was up .4 – but that is no big deal, I’m just going to keep going! I’m still wearing my Koo-Dohz bracelet. Koo-Dohz is a weight loss motivating bracelet that helps keep you focused on your journey. Everyone knows how excited they get when they first want to make changes but as the months go by and bad habits creep back in, all of a sudden you are back to where you started.

Today was an ESPECIALLY challenging at work today. Like most offices – there is usually a “food table” where someone brings in treats, or leftovers from a luncheon, or in my case today…..

crumbs

Yep – GIANT cupcakes from CRUMBS bakery by my office – they are HUGE! That was this afternoon – but what was this morning?

donuts with bacon

PLUS, girl scout cookies (thin mints) and one of my co-workers is selling candy bars for his son’s school.

BUT I MADE IT, DIDN’T HAVE ONE BITE OF FOOD AND IT WASN’T THAT BAD!!!

(and I probably saved myself 1,000 calories) In fact, I’m going to see how many calories is in a crumbs cupcake…I’ll be right back.

OK, found it! The one I would have eaten would have been the devils food cake. It has 550 calories and 30 grams of fat! Koo-Dohz to me for steering clear of that!

AND, if you really want help staying motivated to lose weight OR are having a hard time maintaining it, some of my blogger friends have started AIM “Adventures in Maintenance!”
