Kitchen Bites #24: June & July 2017

By Thefoodiecoupleblog

The last couple of months have been a bit hectic here and thus I wasn’t able to get a Kitchen Bites blog done for you in June, so this months it’s 2 for 1! These are the things we’ve been trying out this month.

First of all we tried a new brand of ready meal from a brand called My Healthy Kitchen – My HK. These microwavable meals claim to be nutritionally balanced and are inspired by flavours from all over the world. There’s gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options too.

There are currently 6 meals available; Prawn Katsu, Moroccan Prawn, Pea, Mint & Rocket Risotto, Mediterannean Vegetable Risotto, Chicken Paella and Oriental Chicken. We tried out a section of these and were pretty impressed.  They are simple to cook in the microwave and these is a clever piece of cardboard separating the main ingredients from the sauce, that you remove after cooking which I liked, I think it meant that the whole meal didn’t get sloppy like some ready meals do.

We did think the portion sizes were a tad on the small size, but that probably shows that we eat to large portions normally! Definitely ones worth a go if you’re looking for a quick healthy option! Available now from Waitrose, Ocado and Amazon Fresh.

Next up is a new crisp from the well know brand, Burts Chips. They have created a tasty and wholesome snack –  Quinoa Crinkles. The crinkles come in two flavors Sweet Pepper & Chorizo and West Country Cream Cheese. They are gluten free and a high source of fibre-with less than 90 calories per packet.

I wasn’t expecting to like this, I always seem to be disappointed with crisp alternatives, but actually I really enjoyed these. The cream cheese flavor was partially impressive and not bland at all.

These are launching in Waitress from this month so keep your eyes out for them!

Thirdly is a new brand to me, a small artisan producer which we came across in July at Elvaston Castle Food Festival in Derbyshire. They are called Peckish, and do a whole range of condiments including Jams, Pickles and Sauces. We picked up three to try after spending a while tasting everything they had on offer! Lee chose their Pink Grapefruit and Prosecco Marmalade, I chose the Red Pepper Pesto and a joint descision on the Roasted Garlic Pickle.

Another well known brand up next – Philadelphia. They have just launched some brand new products – Flip and Dip. In these they are combining their famous lightly whipped Philadelphia cheese, and topping it with mouth-watering sauces, including Sweet Chilli, Mexican Salsa or Caramelised Onion. These are perfect for sharing, but the question is – are you a double dipper?! I have to confess I probably am, at least I am with family and friends!

I really enjoyed all these flavours – being particularly partial to the mexican salsa! I think they would be great for picnics and BBQs!

Last but not least this month was a box full of goodies for Imogen, from a new company called Heavenly Tasty Organics, the first baby/toddler food brand to be accredited by Sugarwise, an organisation fast becoming the equivalent to the Fairtrade mark for lower sugar food and drink.

This is really great to know – as parents we count on snacks on many occasions, and having that peace of mind that these are that bit healthier is brilliant. The collection of snacks includes; Coconut Squishes (6mths) which are made from coconut milk,  Yummy Wafer Wisps (6mths), Happy Halo Bites (10mths) the handiest small snack, Crispy Veggie Waffles (12mths) in a pumpkin flavor or Beet and Mini Italian Breadsticks (12mths).

The whole range has been thoughtfully created using 100% organic ingredients and a blend of superfoods in each recipe.

So far we have tried all apart from the breadsticks. Imogen isn’t quite 12 months for another couple of weeks so I’m hanging on to those for now. I’ve been really impressed with everything we have tried, it’s all gone down really well with Imogen, which isn’t always the case with snacks, she can be quite picky!Firm winners though have to be the Halo Bites and the Wafer Wisps, which get absolutely demolished at breakneck speed! They’re available now at most major supermarkets so definitely go check them out.
