Kilchoman Plowed Society 364 Review

Who is the Plowed Society and why am I drinking a bottle of their Kilchoman Plowed Society 364 cask? The short of it is that the Plowed folks are whisky nerds who have a singular pursuit to imbibe the best whisky they possibly can; it’s a club with a highly respected – and short – member list. They’ve done a number of private club bottlings over the years, including a Brora, and this is the latest. No I’m not member, just someone lucky enough to score one of their picks.

In Kilchoman’s Words: Kilchoman Plowed Society 364

“Warm buzz on the nose, caramelized apple. Cinnamon red hot and sweet with multiple dynamic flavor detonations on the palate. Finish is long, well integrated and complex.”

We’ll dig deeper into the details in the Kilchoman Plowed Society 364 review below, but on a top-line note this is quite possibly the fruitiest Kilchoman I’ve ever had. The big fruity nature of this whisky reminds me of some of the Aaron single ex-Bourbon casks I’ve enjoyed that were huge fruit bombs. It’s a profile I’ve come to enjoy.

Kilchoman Plowed Society 364 Review

EYE
Pale gold

NOSE
Orchard fruit, vanilla, peat, honey, minerality, toffee, saline and a bit of malt and oak. There’s a slight butteriness to it that gets enhanced with some water which also brings out a bit more apples.

PALATE
Smoked meat, apple heavy orchard fruit, honey, roasted malt, buttery vanilla, brine, melted plastic, minerality and some macadamia nuts and baking spice. Water brings out even more apples, spice and honey.

FINISH
Long dissolve of peat, orchard fruit, honey, malt, spice and macadamia nuts.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Excellent balance, full round body and a dense oily feel.

OVERALL
Kilchoman Plowed Society 364 is a great pick, but I didn’t really have any doubts; the Plowed guys know their whisky. The aroma is everything you want out of a non-sherried Islay – it’s crisp and bracing like fall by the ocean; the apple heavy profile completes that scene. The palate follows suite bringing a rustic sea-side profile of fruit, smoked meat and brine.

There’s something romantic about this dram, it keeps conjuring the image of a small sea-side village in the fall. Suggesting it would be the perfect dram to drink around a fire made from driftwood while enjoying some dutch oven apple cobbler. Adding a bit of water enhances the apple and peat notes of the Kilchoman Plowed Society 364 and surfaces a touch more of that lovely minerally spirit that drives this whisky. A solid pour all around.

SCORE: 90/100 (A-)
