As seems to happen often in the summer when schools let out, professional development for educators ramps up. June is a prime example as several education related summits populate this month’s calendar. A couple of the education specific conferences are included below. Both focus on higher education, while the event in Florida looks more at business schools’ role in educating for a sustainable future. Brazil is also hosting a number of conferences. A trio of major international events centered on the United Nations’ ongoing push for sustainable development are happening this month in Rio de Janeiro. All three are listed below.
Just as an FYI, 2012′s first Tour de Fat date is this weekend in Nashville, TN. If you’re in the area, hop on a bike and join the festivities.

AASHE Workshop for Integrating Sustainability in Education
When: June 4 – 6, 2012
Where: San Diego, CA
Description: This three-day workshop allows academic faculty to explore how they can meaningfully integrate sustainability, which is broadly defined, into their classrooms. The workshop will be comprised of faculty (participant) discussion groups, resource experts, case studies, examples of best practice, and a particular focus on the importance of student learning for sustainability. Included in the cost of the workshop are presentations on sustainable agriculture, sustainable communities, and biomimicry; a visit to the San Diego Zoo; a presentation on sustainability initiatives at historic Balboa Park; a Kumeyaay exhibit and presentation at the San Diego Museum of Man; and an optional excursion to the Mission Bay Aquatic Center, with a tour and canoeing or kayaking afterwards.

RIO +20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development
When: June 4 – 6, 2012
Where: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Description: The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) is being organized in pursuance of General Assembly Resolution 64/236 (A/RES/64/236). The Conference will take place in Brazil on 4-6 June 2012 to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg. It is envisaged as a Conference at the highest possible level, including Heads of State and Government or other representatives. The Conference will result in a focused political document. The objective of the Conference is to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenges.

World Symposium on Sustainable Development at Universities (WSSD-U-2012)
When: June 5 – 8, 2012
Where: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Description: The objectives of UNCSD are: to secure renewed political commitment to sustainable development; to assess progress towards internationally agreed goals on sustainable development and to address new and emerging challenges. The Summit will also focus on two specific themes: a green economy in the context of poverty eradication and sustainable development, and an institutional framework for sustainable development. UNCSD offers a unique opportunity to also discuss the extent to which universities have been providing a meaningful contribution towards the efforts in shaping a better world and, perhaps more importantly, to discuss what else remains to be done.
