It’s Déjà Vu All Over Again: Romney-Ryan Filed Intention to Run for Presidency with FEC

By Eowyn @DrEowyn

Any person who intends or is considering running for the presidency of the United States of America must register with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) by filing an FEC Form 1.

Created in 1974 by Congress as an amendment to the Federal Election Campaign Act, the FEC is an independent regulatory agency to regulate campaign finance legislation — “to disclose campaign finance information, to enforce the provisions of the law such as the limits and prohibitions on contributions, and to oversee the public funding of Presidential elections.”

The FEC’s website discloses that one month and 8 days ago on January 31, 2016, Mitt Romney and House Speaker Paul Ryan — the GOP’s 2012 nominees for president and vice-president, respectively — had filed precisely FEC Form 1, indicating their intention, once again, to run for the presidency.

Some of you may recall that in early January, there was news that Romney was weighing a White House run.

As Politico reported, at a private meeting in New York on Jan. 8, 2016, Mitt Romney told a group of about 30 former donors that he is considering running for president, a major turnaround for a past GOP nominee who just a year ago categorically ruled out a 2016 run. According to one source, Romney said, “Everybody in here can go tell your friends that I’m considering a run.” At the time, Romney was prompted by his concerns about Jeb Bush’s candidacy.

23 days after his meeting with his longtime supporters, Romney and Ryan filed Form 1 with the Federal Election Commission.

Now that Bush has dropped out of the race, Romney switched his concerns to Donald Trump.

A month after he had filed FEC Form 1, Romney and Ryan (joined by 2008 Republican presidential nominee Senator John McCain) publicly attacked Trump, calling him unfit for office and a danger for the nation and the Republican Party. (See “Why are they so afraid of Donald Trump?”)

That’s all we need: yet another candidate to further divide and split the GOP field.
