Is Scalp Damage Stunting Your Hair Growth?

By Rockitnapptural @Rockitnapptural
We all want to have healthy hair and most, if not all of us want to retain as much hair length as possible. I know I do. Sometimes, we spend so much time and attention on our hair that we neglect another very important aspect of healthy hair growth. The scalp.
Is Scalp Damage Stunting Your Hair Growth?
Damage to the scalp can certainly cause hair loss issues and stunted hair growth. This includes anything from careless hair practices, excessive scratching, constant pulling, wearing braids that are too tight, over-processing from relaxers to illnesses and diseases such as eczema, psoriasis, alopecia, severely dry and dandruff scalp.
If you've recently transitioned by doing a big chop and you've noticed issues with your new growth hair, flaky scalp or sores, this could be the result of scalp that has been damaged by over-processing from former relaxers. Excessive scratching could also lead to a sore, blistered scalp that could ooze or bleed without you even knowing.
Those who may suffer from eczema, psoriasis or dry scalp may feel the constant need to scratch the scalp. This is the worse thing you could do. Tea tree oil, peppermint oil, bergamot oil and lavender oil may help calm the need to scratch. Lemon essential oil mixed with a carrier oil such as coconut or avocado oil is ideal for treating flaky scalp and dandruff issues. You could also try a hair rinse or a hot oil treatment using any of the above mentioned oils mixed with Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Whether the goal of your natural hair journey is to achieve healthier hair, longer hair, or both don't forget to show your scalp just as much TLC as you do to your hair.
