Is Facebook Planning to Build a Virtual World with Oculus Rift?

Posted on the 26 March 2014 by Nrjperera @nrjperera

“Mobile is the platform of today, and now we’re also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow,” said Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. “Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play and communicate.”

Facebook’s Oculus VR deal costs the company $2 billion, however it’s only $400 million in cash, along with 23.1 million shares of Facebook stock and an extra $300 million for completing Facebook’s future plans with the device. I’m no business genius, but it still feels like Oculus selling out to Facebook is a very bad idea.

It’s unclear what Facebook has in mind with the virtual reality headset. Although the company promises the Oculus’ main focus will still be on gaming. There have been talks about Facebook planning to make their own games, although this acquisition points us towards something else as the company hints us of using Oculus Rift as “the next social and communications platform.”

Does this mean Facebook will turn itself into a virtual world where we get to meet people virtually? Or do we get to play Farmville with Oculus Rift? I have no idea. But we’ll have answers soon enough as the transaction between the two companies will close down in Q2 2014.
