Is Bisexuality Simply a New Fad?

By Tempestra @tempestra1

It seems like everyone in Hollywood’s bisexual these days, don’t you think? So much so that I’m actually surprised so much of a big deal is being made of Glee’s current bisexual storyline (the introduction of a new character, played by Naya Rivera, who is perhaps best known for her lingerie photoshoots). The original was Angelina Jolie, of course, and that was just part of her rumoured all-round sexual antics including that somewhat inappropriate kiss with her brother, and carrying around Billy Bob Thornton’s blood. But now we’ve got everyone from Megan Fox to Pink to Nelly Furtado to Tom Hardy to Jodie Marsh, Gaga and Lilo all claiming to be proudly bi.Is bisexuality simply a new fad?

I have to admit, I did wonder if it was perhaps just a fashion thing. It’s very cool to say you’re bisexual now. It seems to mean that you’re a bit of a badass, and you’re just oh-so-sexual you can’t contain it to one gender. I was quite suspicious, so I did a bit of research.

Now, as I suspected, there are quite a few celebs who are calling themselves bisexual, but admit that they haven’t really had very much experience with a member of the same sex. More a kind of bisexuality of the mind. But then I discovered, much to my complete shock, that this isn’t really a new occurrence. Apparently Cary Grant, who was married five times, also had a very meaningful twelve year relationship with a man! Laurence Olivier, James Dean AND Marlon Brando were all thought to be bisexual. Not to mention Tallulah Bankhead, Greta Garbo, Marlene Deitrich, Joan Crawford and even Marilyn Monroe.

Hmmm…maybe it’s because they’re actors. But it just goes to show, there’s nothing new about these trendy ‘new’ bisexuals.
