What to Expect During LASIK?

During the LASIK eye surgery, the surgeon will use a precise laser to create a thin flap in your cornea. After lifting up the flap, he will access the underlying layers of your cornea and then reshape this area using an excimer laser. A small amount of tissues will be removed and then the refraction of light is corrected so that it focuses on the center of your retina. The exact process depends on your visual requirements. If you are nearsighted, then the surgeon will flatten the cornea and if you suffer from farsightedness then the cornea will be made steeper.

What to Expect During Recovery?

Recovery from LASIK is quick and easy. When your surgeon has achieved the final results, he will lay the flap back down over your eye. The tissues will heal naturally within a few days. In most cases, you will notice a significant improvement in your vision within the first 24 hours. Some of you may experience some minor sensitivity, but this will dissipate within a day or two. The LASIK eye surgery has a significantly higher success rate. Over 96 percent of LASIK patients achieve the 20/20 vision or better.

The risks involved with this procedure are infection, glare or halos, overcorrection or undercorrecion, dry eye, difficulty with the night vision. In most cases, these side effects wil clear up on their own and in very rare cases, you will need a revision surgery.

Here are some instructions to guide you to wear your eye makeup after LASIK eye surgery:

  1. You should avoid wearing eye makeup for about a week post the LASIK eye surgery. Once you no longer rely on the glasses or contacts, your eyes will become the focal point of your face. You can continue wearing foundation and other products after discussing with your eye surgeon.
  2. If you apply makeup around the eyes, then small particles could come in contact with the sensitive area and this could increase your risk for infection and irritation.
  3. When you begin to wear the eye makeup again, you should purchase the new eyeliner and mascara. Following the surgery, the bacteria can cling with the use of old products and you are more susceptible to infection, therefore use only the new eyeliner and mascara products.
  4. While returning to your normal routine of wearing the eye makeup, avoid touching your eyes themselves during the application.
  5. Avoid using foundations or powders around the eye region for one week. However, you can used foundation, blush and bronzer on your face after the first 3-4 days post surgery.
  6. Avoid using the eye creams and lotions for two weeks post surgery. When applying a moisturizer on your face, ensure not to apply to the areas around the eyes as they can seep into the eye and cause irritation or infection.
  7. Try not to use any makeup which could flake off in your eyes and cause irritation or make you feel the urge to rub your eyes. The flaky products include powder shadows with glitter or sparkle and mascaras which lengthen or strengthen the eyelashes.
  8. Always be gentle while applying and removing your eye makup after the first week since your eyes are still sensitive and at higher risk for infection.
  9. It is best to use the minimal makeup to avoid irritation to your eyes, instead work your way up to the heavy makeup post the LASIK eye surgery.
  10. Be careful not to wear anything waterproof which will be difficult to remove later.

Ask your doctor for further guidance to know until when you should avoid wearing the eye makeup and how to use the eye makeup without increasing your risk to infection.
