Insane Places to Sleep

I know a girl who loves to sleep more than anything on earth. Happy to have more than 10 hours of sleep a night and even happier to nap on weekend afternoons, her sleeping sessions have become a running joke that everyone calls ‘celebrating life’… because she’s really not.

I don’t think she’s the only one though – if surveys and statistics are anything to go by, there are thousands of sleepy-heads out there. A recent survey from Tempur-Pedic showed some scary results that leave me wondering – why the heck aren’t people getting this right?

With A Client or the all Mighty

Napping in appropriate places seems to be a favorite past time for Americans. From more than 1000 people surveyed, over half of them admitted to falling asleep in places they shouldn’t – like during client calls, at their work computers and even in church, God bless their tired souls.

Weird Places at home and at work

A few admitted to catching a quick nap in the bathroom, hopefully not mid pee, while some said they’d fallen asleep during meetings, on the bus while traveling and at the kitchen table. There are also a few ‘extreme’ nappers who admitted to celebrating life in elevators, in court, graveyards and even in combat – though I think those people were knocked out.

Seems like a normal day at the office for a narcoleptic, but doctors say that there’s a huge difference between planning a nap – such as my life-celebrating girl – and falling asleep by accident while, say, walking a tightrope over a chasm.

Humans aren’t supposed to fall asleep during random activities that should be stimulating, even insomniacs, and if you know someone who does, perhaps it’s time to visit a doctor? This is especially important if they drive, or operate anything that could kill a bunch of people.

The internet is full of websites with people talking about the weird places they’ve slept – in the trunks of their cars and at nudist colonies is hilarious, but that’s more from necessity and weird lifestyle choices than anything else. There are a lot of people out there who enjoy sleeping in extreme places for kicks, though almost everyone retires to their bed at the end of the day, because that’s the most comfortable of all – maybe they should start getting in some regular hours from now on though.
