Indie Beauty Spotlight: Mixology Makeup

If you’re a regular follower of Crows’ Feet, Cupcakes, and Cellulite, you’re familiar with our Indie Beauty Spotlight series – which is designed to pay homage to non-cookie cutter, non-mass production beauty products that deserve rockstar “spotlight” exposure!

So, who’s ready to get their indie beauty on? This week’s Indie Beauty Spotlight is on vegan mineral makeup maker Mixology Makeup. What is “vegan” makeup, you ask? Believe it or not, a lot of makeup is made with animal ingredients, such as elastin (derived from cows) and allantoin (derived from mammals) or has been tested on animals. Mineral makeup maker Mixology is 100 percent handmade vegan makeup and is free of cheap fillers, chemicals, synthetic dyes, parabens, nano-particles, or preservatives. (Whew! That list sounds like the ingredients you’d find on a Twinkies package.)

Model is wearing Alias, Pirate, Starlight, Inked, and Ingenue Blush.

So, whether you’re looking for a cruelty-free, vegan makeup line or simply someone who wants to use all-natural makeup, Mixology offers a full line of cosmetics including eye shadows, foundations, eyeliners, blushes, and lip balms. They also offer shadow sets called “Eyes POP Collection” geared specifically for your eye color. For example, the Brown Eyes POP Collection includes 3 shadows and 1 eyeliner: Dune (a golden beige shade), U Minx (a rich chocolate shade), and Crush (a rich purple shade), and eyeliner in Plum. This color combo is designed to make those brown eyes of yours go from ho-hum to oh, my and the best part is the “mixing” or layering! You can apply as much or little shadow as you like, depending on the makeup style you’re going for as well as layer colors to create completely different looks.

Another impressive element is their huge variety of colors (and I mean huge) in cheeky names like Theory-I’ve Got A Few, Barista-Caffeine Rush, and Flaunt It. These all-natural, spunky shadows come in containers similar to Bare Minerals and are 7 bucks each. To see their complete makeup line, you can go to their website or Etsy page. I know what you’re thinking: ugh, lose mineral makeup can be such a mess sometimes. Well, fear not, mixing mavens, as I just stumbled upon the most genius makeup creation since the inception of mineral makeup! Mineral Mate is an application and mixing tray (with caps) that was created specifically for mineral makeup! You can put your lose makeup in the separate wells and then apply your makeup without the fuss (and mess). And when you’re finished, simply put the caps on the “wells” (or cylinders) that contain makeup and, voila, you’ve applied your fave mineral makeup less the powdery mess! The best part? You can simply pull out the tray, pop off the lids, apply your minerals and skip the annoying step of trying to dump the minerals into the tiny ‘lil lid of the original minerals container (that inevitably gets all over your bathroom when you go to screw the lid back on). Pure and utter genius. Happy mixing, makeup mavens!
