In Need of a Digital Detox

Buondi's wifi at Praia de Matosinhos

We’re taking a road trip this weekend, and my plan is to photograph and see new places and stay off the internet. It’s easier said than done these days, thanks to data plans and wifi. Recently, Buondi (a coffee company under the Nestlé umbrella) installed wifi on beaches around Portugal. You can see one of their red transmitters in the photo above, taken at Matosinhos Beach.

While the option to stay connected — for free — is a benefit, it’s up to the individual user to decide when enough is enough. I made the decision seven years ago not to buy another laptop, partly because it’s less powerful for the price and more expensive to maintain. But also because the work/life balance is harder to maintain with a laptop. I want to be able to leave work behind, not constantly have it follow me around.

So, here’s to a weekend devoted to exploring with a camera and reconnecting with nature.

Bom fim de semana!
