In Memoriam: Michael Nyqvist

Posted on the 28 June 2017 by House Of Geekery @houseofgeekery

On the 27th June this year we saw the passing of Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist. He was aged 56 and died of lung cancer. Although he is relatively new to English speaking audiences, but he has made a powerful impression.

Nyqvist was born in Stockholm in 1960 and placed into an orphanage from where he was adopted whilst still a baby. As an teenager he went on a student exchange to Nebraska, where he started acting. After a brief period studying ballet Nyqvist continued his work in theatre and appeared on television for the first time in 1982. In 2000 he gained larger recognition for his role in Together, the first of many nominated roles.

Ten years later international audiences began to see Michael Nyqvist in English speaking roles, most notably as villain Kurt Hendricks in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. He also picked up the highly sought after role of Mikael Blomkvist in the original adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, a role he played across the full trilogy.

Personally I will remember Michael Nyqvist as the man who delivered one of the best damn monologues in modern cinema.

Rest in peace, Michael Nyqvist.
