Parents of children who are diagnosed as suffering from a mental illness have the same high hopes as parents of healthy children. And, it is not easy to come to terms with the impact of the diagnosis. I know that I found it difficult to watch my son’s suffering and I know that the rest of our family felt the same way.
I think back to the many prescriptions I have had filled for my son, only to have his psychiatrist tell me not long afterward that they were not working.
It was difficult to learn to keep my head when those around me were losing theirs and some doctors were even blaming me. Psychiatrists from the old school tended to blame mothers for all evils but I knew that no one could cause schizophrenia. But no one! People fear what they don’t understand and many do not know much about mental illness.
To all the parents out there who have a child suffering from a mental illness here is a quote by Rudyard Kipling called IF, which acted as inspiration for me.
If you can survive all this adversity, yours is the earth and everything that’s in it !
