What could have been a solid teen lit followup to The Fault In Our Stars is just too sappy for its own good. The film is a bit choppy because of the nature of inserting flashbacks constantly into the story, but even through all the tragedy, you always feel like you know how the movie is going to end. And Adam (Blackley) is just too damn perfect of a boyfriend to take seriously. The good thing is that Chloe Grace Moretz is fantastic in her role.

I also blame the trailer for ruining all the suspense of the movie. I knew going into it that she was going to lose her whole family, and possibly not knowing that would have kept the weight of the situation in the movie instead of me anticipating their deaths. The problem is that you know everything, either because it is obvious or because it was ruined in the trailer. It’s also dripping with sap, almost like Nicholas Sparks ghost wrote the screenplay.

Again, I’d almost recommend it based on Moretz’s performance alone, and the fact that there is a decent concept here. I’d say, tread lightly with this film. Just go in knowing it’s sappy as shit.

FINAL GRADE: B-
