Mr. A. P. Anilkumar, Minister for Tourism, Kerala recently inaugurated the Idukki Garden Tourism Project on the premises of the Cheruthoni dam, which has been completed under the Idukki Tourism Destination Development Project at a cost of Rs. 43.9 million.
'The government has given importance to the promotion of sustainable tourism and protection of the environment and natural resources. Kerala has become one of the most favoured destinations for international tourists. The main tourist spots in Idukki District are Munnar and Thekkady,' the tourism minister said.
Facilities opened in the Idukki garden tourism project include parking area, pavilion and an open theater. Tourists can enjoy views of Idukki and Cheruthoni dams and a panoramic view of Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary from the garden. Cheruthoni, which lies between two major tourist destinations - Thekkady and Munnar - has the potential to be developed into a major tourist destination. Basic facilities such as accommodation for tourists, eco-friendly infrastructure and also regional factors such as topography would have to be taken into account while implementing new tourism projects.
The minister also inaugurated the construction work of Kuyili Eco Environ Tourism project in Idukki.
