Spanish painter Eloy Morales paints large hyper-realistic portraits of himself with smears of paint or shaving cream across his face. This messy addition causes light to catch and reflect in unusual ways. Eloy patiently works through tiny sections at a time, filling in paint and blending as he goes. The painting spreads slowly across the canvas rather than being built up from layers.

The realistic details is not the priority for Eloy. He explains, “Many people think that my work is based on details, but it is not that way. For me the secret is in the correct valuation of tones.” The details are already integrated when the overall image is evaluated if the transition between tones is accurate.
