Human Rights Day South Africa

"Anti-Apartheid Movement : 50th Anniversary" The Independent, 3rd June 2009

March 21st has been known as South Africa's Human Rights day since 1994 in commemoration of the Sharpeville massacre, which happened on the same day in 1960. 69 people were murdered by the police in Sharpeville at a protest against apartheid (racial segregation) laws. Apartheid only ended in 1993, the 1994 elections being the first in South Africa with universal suffrage.
