How to Wear Denim On Denim with StyleFashion is fickle. We all know this. Take something like wearing denim on denim. A look that was once laughed at, and seemed only acceptable for cattle ranchers, Chuck Norris and people who didn't know any better, is now fashionable. Just last week, a client and I were talking about this as I styled her in this trend.

Yet, despite the triumphant return of wearing double denim, there still are some things to keep in mind when wearing it, the most important being that the denim you wear in one outfit should not be in the same shade. With all the different washes and denim colors out there this is an easy rule to follow. In addition to this tip, there are some other ways to wear denim on denim stylishly. Check out the five suggestions below.

My denim jacket is one of my favorite things about spring. It's such an easy jacket to grab for a light layer of warmth. However, it can be limited given the fact that I wear jeans just about every day. What I do like to do with my denim jacket is use it to make dresses look more casual.

Another way to get around wearing a denim jacket, if your wardrobe consists of a lot of jeans, is to buy one in colored denim, like how I styled it here with this ecru denim jacket from J. Crew. I used this jacket with a pair of distressed jeans from Karen Millen and then colorfully accessorized the outfit with a purple Boden t-shirt, a turquoise necklace from Max & Chloe, a yellow scarf from Zappos.com, a pair of taupe oxfords from Modcloth and a grey bag from Tory Burch.

Here is a classic example of how wearing light denim with dark denim works. This chambray shirt from Madewell is much lighter than the dark rinse jeans from the Gap that enough contrast is created. The outfit is casually finished with agate earrings from Ann Taylor, a pair of Metallic Tieks, a mint bag from 6pm.com and a peach wrap bracelet from Nordstrom.

This all denim look combines the previous two tips. Additionally, the denim blazer from White House|Black Market is in an unwashed dark denim that it's hard to tell it is even in a denim fabric. Underneath it I layered a chambray camisole from Modcloth and styled this outfit with a pair of lemon yellow skinny jeans. The ensemble if finished with a pair of metallic espadrilles from Steve Madden, a printed blue and yellow scarf from Nordstrom, a blue tonal necklace and handbag from Fossil.

Layering a sweater over a chambray shirt is a look I have been doing a lot lately and it really helps to break up the denim on denim look when I wear it with jeans. In this outfit, I took this chambray shirt from J. Crew and styled it under an oversized sweater from Mango. With this look, I added a pair of boyfriend jeans, a pair of red flats from Joe's Jeans for a pop, and finished the outfit with a white bag from Nine West, pyramid drop earrings from Max & Chloe and stacked bracelets from Bauble Bar.

When wearing denim on denim, something as simple as a belt to break up all the denim can make a huge difference. Take how I styled this sleeveless popover chambray shirt with classic denim skirt from Ann Taylor. The leather belt from Nordstrom not only cinches the waist but adds some dimension to this otherwise all denim look. The outfit if casually finished with a pair of wedges from Lucky Brand, a white studded bag from Macy's, cuff bracelet from Stella & Dot and disc drop earrings.

Denim will always be in style and I think it will be a long time before we see denim on denim fall out of favor. With these tips for wearing it well I am sure that Chuck Norris won't be wondering if you stole his outfit.
